ROOSS, a village and a parish in Patrington district, E. R. Yorkshire. The village stands 3¼ miles N N E of Ottringham r. station, and 7 E of Heden; and has a post-office under Hull. The parish contains also the hamlet of Bracken-Hill, and part of the township of Owstwick. Acres, with the rest of Owstwick, 3, 520. ...
Real property, with the rest of O., £6, 377. Pop., exclusive of the rest of O., 652. Houses, 154. The property is divided among a few. The manor was held, in the time of Henry I., by Peter de Ros, ancestor of Lord de Ros, and of the Scottish families of Rose and Ross. The living is a rectory in the diocese of York. Value, £690.* Patron, Sir P. Sykes, Bart. The church is later English, and was restored in 1842. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels, a national school, and charities £21.
