In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Closeburn like this:
Closeburn, par. and vil. with ry. sta., in W. of co. and 11¾ miles NW. of Dumfries, 29,347 ac. (246 water), pop. 1505; P.O.; near the vil. are Closeburn Castle, an ancient seat of the Kirkpatricks, and Closeburn House.
