In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Stair like this:

Stair, par. and vil., Ayrshire, on river Ayr - par., 5376ac., pop. 928; vil., 6½ miles E. of Ayr; P.O.; gives the title of earl to the family of Dalrymple; Stair House, seat, is in vicinity.
