In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Gretna like this:

Gretna (or Graitney), par. and vil. (ry. stations, Gretna and Gretna Green), Dumfries-shire, on Solway Firth -- par., 7863 ac., pop. 1212; vil. (comprising Gretna Green and Springfield), 9½ miles NW. of Carlisle; P.O., T.O.; Gretna Green was long famous for its runaway marriages.
