In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Dun like this:
Dun, par. (ry. sta. Bridge of Dun, 5¾ miles W. of Montrose; P.O.), NE. Forfarshire, 4306 ac., pop. 541; contains Dun House, seat, Dun's Dish, loch, and the hamlets of Burnside of Dun and Muir of Dun.
