In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Mochrum like this:
Mochrum, par. and vil., SE. Wigtownshire, on E. side of Luce Bay - par., 24,071 ac., pop. 2315; vil., 4½ miles SW. of Whauphill ry. sta. and 8 miles SW. of Wigtown; P.O.; the par. contains Mochrum Loch (1½ mile long) and Mochrum Fell (646 ft.).
