In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Monikie like this:

Monikie, par. and ry. sta., S. Forfarshire - par., 8921 ac., pop. 1412; sta., 9¾ miles SE. of Forfar and 11½ miles NE. of Dundee; the Monikie Waterworks yield part of the water-supply of Dundee.
