In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Wyre Forest like this:

Wyre Forest, ry. sta., Worcestershire, on NW. border of co., 3 miles NW. of Bewdley. Wyre Forest forms the southern portion of the Severn Valley coal-field, which stretches from vicinity of Worcester to Newport in Shropshire.
