In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Runnymede like this:
Runney Mead, broad level meadow (now a race-course), Surrey, on river Thames, in NW. vicinity of Egham and 2 miles W. of Staines; here, or on Magna Charta Island adjacent, King John signed the great charter, June l9,1215; Runneymead Park, seat, is here.
