In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Newbridge like this:
NEWBRIDGE, a hamlet in the W of Monmouth; on the river Ebbw, and on the Western Valleys railway, 5¼ miles W S W of Pontypool. It has a station on the railway, and a post-office under Newport, Monmouth.
