In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Barstable like this:
BARSTABLE, a hundred in Essex. It touches the Thames, 12 miles above and below Gravesend; extends from 7½ to 15 miles inland; and includes 33 parishes Acres, 77,400. Pop. in 1851, 15,216; in 1861, 15,280. Houses, 3,038.
