In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Clifton like this:
CLIFTON, or Rocksavage, a township in Runcorn parish, Cheshire; 2 miles NE of Frodsham. Pop., 30. It gives the title of Earl of Rocksavage to the Marquis of Cholmondeley.
