In 1882-4, Frances Groome's Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland described Ardgartan like this:
Ardgartan, a small low promontory on the western shore and near the head of Loch Long, in Lochgoilhead parish, NE Cowal, Argyllshire, 1¾ mile SW of Arrochar. In the grounds of Ardgartan House, traversed by Croe Water, is a splendid Spanish chestnut, the finest perhaps in Scotland, being 90 feet high, and girthing 202/3 feet at 5 feet from the ground.
