In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Hengoed like this:
HENGOED, a hamlet in Gelligaer parish, Glamorgan; on the river Rumney and on the Cardiff and Rumney railway, 5¾ miles N of Caerphilly. It has a station on the railway. Real property, £5, 823; of which £4, 559 are in mines. Pop., 578. Houses, 115.
