In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described St Leonards like this:
St Leonards on Sea, town and par., on coast of Sussex, on W. side of Hastings and within its parliamentary limits, pop. 7165; 2 Banks; has a pier 900 ft. long, a large pavilion, and all the conveniences of a much frequented watering-place. See HASTINGS.
