In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Penhill like this:

PENHILL, an eminence overhanging the lower part of Wensleydale, in N. R. Yorkshire; 5½ miles S W by W of Leyburn. It consists of gritstone, while all thetract for miles around it consists of limestone; and itcommands an extensive view.
