In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Blackrock like this:

BLACKROCK, a ferry station on the river Severn, near Portskewet r. station, 4 miles SW of Chepstow, in Monmouth. There is an inn here; and the width of the ferry, at full tide, is about 2¼ miles.
