In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Newcastle like this:
NEWCASTLE, a village in the N of Monmouthshire; 4¾ miles N W of Monmouth. It has a post-office under Monmouth, an ancient oak 27 feet in girth, a well formerly reputed to be "holy, " and remains of an ancientfort.
