In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Newby like this:
NEWBY, a hamlet in Rainton-cum-Newby township, Topcliffe parish, N. R. Yorkshire; 6 miles N by W of Boroughbridge. Newby Park here is the seat of the Hudsons. The hamlet is a meet for the Bedale hounds.
The location is that of the seat of Baldersby Park. The name "Newby" has not been found on topographic maps other than as part of "Rainton with Newby". However, the Victoria County History entry for Topcliffe says "Baldersby Park, the residence of Mr. John Brennand, was formerly called Newby Park and is situated in the township of Rainton with Newby" (http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=64613, accessed 11 Dec 2011). Additional information about this locality is available for Rainton
