In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Shandy Hall like this:

Shandy Hall, picturesque old mansion, Coxwold par., North-Riding Yorkshire, 7½ miles SE. of Thirsk and near Coxwold Church; Lanrence Sterne (1713-68) resided here for some years, and wrote his Tristram Shandy and Sentimental Journey.
