In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Midford like this:

MIDFORD, a village in the NE of Somerset; in a pretty valley, 3½ miles S of Bath. It has a post office under Bath. Midford Castle, on the terraced slope of an adjacent hill, is the seat ofT. Conolly, Esq., has a picture-gallery, and commands a fine view.
