In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Bingham Melcombe like this:
BINGHAM-MELCOMBE, the seat of the Bingham family in Dorset; on an affluent of the Piddle river, 9 miles NE of Dorchester. It was the birthplace of Sir Richard Bingham, who fought at the siege of St. Quintin, and has a monument in Westminster Abbey.
