In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Southey like this:
SOUTHEY, a village in Ecclesfield township, W. R. Yorkshire; 4¼ miles N of Sheffield.
The location is where the name "Southey Green" appears on the modern 1:25,000 map, and less legibly on our nineteenth century First Series map. Additional information about this locality is available for Ecclesfield
