In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Winterburn like this:
WINTERBURN, a hamlet in Gargrave parish, W. R. Yorkshire; 6 miles NW by N of Skipton. It has an Independent chapel.
