In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Clondalkin like this:
Clondalkin, par. and vil. with ry. sta., in co. and 5 miles W. of Dublin -- par., 4943 ac., pop. 1890; vil., pop. 379; P.O.; has a stone cross and a round tower.
