In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Swords like this:
Swords, town and par., in co. and 8 miles N. of Dublin, on Swords rivulet, 2½ miles NW. of Malahide ry. sta.- par., 9681 ac., pop. 2181; town, pop. 1088; P.O., T.O.; has an ancient round tower (73 ft.), and the ruins of a castle and an abbey. The rivulet runs 7 miles E. to Malahide Bay.
