In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Borris like this:
Borris, or Borris-Idrone, vil. with ry. sta., Clonygoose par., in co. and 17 miles S. of Carlow, 75 miles SW. of Dublin by rail, pop. 617; P.O., T.O. Market-day, Thursday. Borris Castle, the seat of the Kavanaghs, is in the vicinity.
