In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Tullamore like this:
Tullamore.-- market and assize town, and township with ry. sta., Kilbride bar., N. King's co., on Grand Canal, 16 miles NW. of Portarlington and 58 miles W. of Dublin, 841 ac., pop. 5098; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks, 1 newspaper. Market-days, Tuesday and Saturday. It has a distillery and a tobacco manufactory.
