In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Westport like this:
Westport, market and seaport town and township with ry. sta., Oughaval par., SW. co. Mayo, on Westport Bay (at the head of Clew Bay), 6 miles S. of Newport, 11 miles SW. of Castlebar, and 161 miles NW. of Dublin, pop. 4469; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Thursday. The town is beautifully situated, and is a favourite resort for visitors in the bathing season. The exports consist chiefly of oats, oatmeal, and flour. (For shipping statistics, see Appendix.) In the vicinity is Westport House, seat of the Marquis of Sligo.
