In 1837, Samuel Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Ireland described Ballynakill in Killian like this:

BALLINAKILLY, or BALLYNAKILTY, a parish, in the barony of KILLIAN, county of GALWAY, and province of CONNAUGHT, 5 ¼miles (W. by S.) from Ballinamore, on the road from Tuam to Ballinasloe; containing, with the parish of Aghiart, 1630 inhabitants. It is a rectory and vicarage, in the diocese of Tuam, and forms part of the union of Moylough; the tithes, including those of Aghiart, amount to £148. 10. 8 ¼. In the R. C. divisions it is part of the union or district of Mount-Bellew. There is a hedge school, in which about 40 boys and 16 girls are taught.
