In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Thomastown like this:
Thomastown, market town and par. with ry. sta., mid. co. Kilkenny, on river Nore, 11 miles SE. of Kilkenny, 19½ miles N. of Waterford, and 91 miles SW. of Dublin - par., 2041 ac., pop. 1433; town, pop. 1067; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank; has a frieze factory, and extensive corn mills.
