In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Sockbridge like this:
SOCKBRIDGE AND TIRRIL, a township, with two hamlets, in Barton parish, Westmoreland; 2 miles SSW of Penrith. Acres, 11,818. Real property, £1,784. Pop., 245. Houses, 47. S. Hall was the seat of the Lancasters, and is now a farm-house.
