In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Leyland like this:
Leyland, town, par., and township with ry. sta., N. Lancashire, 4½ miles S. of Preston - par., 19,266 ac., pop. 14,116; town and township, 3726 ac., pop. 4961; P.O., T. O., 2 Banks; the trade is mainly agricultural. Leyland is a local government district.
