In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Halstead like this:
Halstead.-- market town and par. with ry. sta., E. Essex, on river Colne, 16 miles NW. of Colchester and 55¾ NE. of London -- par., 5631 ac., pop. 6701; town, pop. 5804; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Friday; contains the Halstead Paper Mills; 1 mile S. of the town is the seat of Hallstead Lodge.
