In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Lydford like this:
Lidford, par. and vil. with ry. sta., Devon - par., 56,333 ac., pop. 2708; vil., on river Lid, 6 miles NE. of Tavistock; is situated amidst charming scenery; has ruins of Lidford Castle, where Judge Jeffreys held one of his assizes; a little to S. of vil. is Lidford Bridge, a one-arched structure thrown across a chasm of the river Lid; Lidford Cascade, a little below the bridge, has a fall of 150 ft.
