In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Ashmansworth like this:
ASHMANSWORTH, a parish in Kingsclere district, Hants; 6½ miles NNW of Whitchurch r. station, and 8½ SSW of Newbury. Post Town, East Woodhay under Newbury. Acres, 1,808. Real property, £1,403. Pop., 201. Houses, 44. The living is a p. curacy, annexed to the rectory of East Woodhay, in the diocese of Winches ter. The church is early English.
