Established by Municipal Corporations Act, 1835 (5 & 6 Wm IV, c76) the most active boroughs became Muncipal Boroughs. Some earlier Boroughs were not made into Municipal Boroughs and those that did not gain this status by the mid 1880's were disfranchised. In all, 178 existing boroughs were reformed. A Municipal Borough often differs in territorial extent from a Parliamentary Borough, the word commonly restricted to towns which do not possess the more dignified title of city. It was extremely rare for Municipal Boroughs to be created by Act of Parliament. All Municipal Boroughs were abolished in 1974.
