nCube definition
The early censuses 1801-31 used this very simple classification of occupations.
It is unclear which persons were instructed to be included, but in 1801
the total of the three occupational categories exactly matched the
total population in most parishes.
This may explain why from 1811 onwards the British census applied the
classification to families rather than persons, although the Irish
census continued to count persons.
