Sources:

  1. This table holds data derived from both Table 2 and Table 3 in Census 1951: England and Wales: Industry Tables (London: HMSO, 1957), for all the local government districts listed in those tables, but reclassified to the 2007 Standard Industrial Classification. It also contains national totals for England and Wales.

Notes:

  1. Each of the detailed industrial categories ('Units') listed in Table 2 has been assigned to one of the 'Divisions' in the 2007 Classification, using the ind_1951_codebook table. This table also includes the simpler SIC 'Sections'. so it can easily be grouped into those.
  2. This table holds exact counts of persons for districts included in Table 2, i.e. towns of over 50,000 population. Figures for districts in the simplified Table 3 were calculated by first calculating the total numbers for each of the detailed categories listed in Table 2 for the aggregate of all districts in a county listed in Table, 3, by subtracting the total for large towns from the overall county total. This was then used to assign persons in the simplified Table 3 categories to each Table 2 category. This method inevitably creates fractional persons!

Checking:

  1. This table was derived programmatically from ind_1951_lg_t and ind_1951_small, both of which have been carefully checked.
