Table ID:
OCC_1881_S     (1251872)
Contents:
1881 occupational statistics for the counties and burghs of Scotland.
Approx. number of rows:
19,084
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Paula Aucott
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1881.

Sources:

  1. The data are transcribed from the following tables: 'Occupations of the inhabitants of the county of [Scottish County Name] at different Ages', and 'Occupations of the inhabitants of the [type of Burgh] Burgh of [Scottish Burgh Name] at different Ages', and 'Summary of the occupations of the inhabitants of Scotland, at Different Ages', all taken from "Abstracts; section XV. Occupations of the people" in the "Ninth Decennial Census of the Population of Scotland Taken 4th April 1881, with Report. Volume II, pp398-913". This is equivalent to the occ_1881_c table for England and Wales.
  2. This is an incomplete transcription of the full tables. The original tables also include a breakdown of occupation for each gender by age: under 5 years, 5-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-44, 45-64, 65 and up. There is no equivalent age-gender-occupation breakdown at county level for England and Wales and therefore these columns were not computerised. A "Total at all ages" column was not transcribed as the figures can be computed from the two columns we did transcribe.
  3. These data were transcribed by Harold Price in Portsmouth in summer and autumn 2016.
  4. The original tables do not include footnotes.

Notes:

  1. The following values of area_type appear:
    • NATION: Scottish national total.
    • SCO_CNTY: County totals (33 areas).
    • PaBu: Parliamentary Burghs (27 areas).
    • PoBu: Police Burghs (7 areas).
  2. The information on burghs mostly relates to Parliamentary burghs. In some cases it lists figures for Municipal or Police burghs, and occasionally gives figures for both Municipal/Police and Parliamentary. Where there is a choice the Parliamentary burgh figures have been entered, where there is not the municipal/police burgh figures have been entered. The different kind of burghs are identified in the data.
  3. The data were standardised to follow more closely the structure of other occupational datasets already incorporated into our system. Specifically, in the original table all occupational data was placed into one field. We have divided this information up into separate Class, Order and sub-Order fields. Further, the locational data is recorded in two fields which means that this table has many rows, but few columns.
  4. The 1881 occupation codebook for Scotland is currently only partially matched to sic2007 & VoB industrial sectors.

Checking:

  1. Data were checked in each county by Harold Price during data entry to ensure: (i) the summed total value for each column of county order summary totals matched the county totals given. (ii) the summed total value for each order matched the county order summary totals given.
  2. The 33 county and 34 burgh names were matched to units in the AUO. However, the status value of the burghs had to be disregarded for this process and further work is required in this area.
