Notes:

  1. This is a list of the 97 (out of c. 1,800) local government districts in 1934 which were designated as depressed or 'Special' areas. They were all in the north of England (Cumberland, Durham or Northumberland) or South Wales (Brecknock, Glamorgan, Monmouthshire or Pembrokeshire.
  2. This list was added to the database for use with 1939 data, but care needs to be taken in re-districting as some County Reviews had already taken place by 1934: With the exception of one small boundary change, all changes affecting Cumberland between 1931 and 1939 took effect on 1/4/1934. There were a few transfers affecting Durham in 1934 and before, but the major changes were in 1936. All changes affecting Northumberland were in April 1935. Brecknockshire was re-districted in April 1934, when two separately listed Civil Parishes were merged into districts. One of the districts involved was Vaynor and Penderyn, which is in the Special Area list. There were two small transfers affecting Glamorgan in 1934. All changes affecting Monmouthshire were in 1935 or later. Pembrokeshire was re-districted in 1934, but the only district in the Special Area list, Pembroke MB, was not involved. In summary, only Cumberland and Brecknockshire should not be re-districted.
