Contents:
Housing Statistics (persons per room) from the 1971 Census.
Approx. number of rows:
1,395
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Paula Aucott
Geography:
Reporting units are identified by:
   Administrative County
   Local Government District
   Local Government District Type
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1971.

Sources:

  1. This table was transcribed from table 24 in the county reports of the 1971 census, 'Persons in permanent buildings by density of occupation (persons per room)' for County, local authority areas, conurbation centres.
  2. It also includes national totals for England and Wales transcribed from Table 11, "Enumerated households and persons in permanent buildings by tenure, type of household space and density of occupation (persons per room)", on p.1 of Housing Part IV: Density of Occupation. The data are limited to overall totals ignoring tenure and type of household space. They were added by Humphrey Southall in June 2017.

Notes:

  1. This table is limited to a transcription of just the actual numbers of persons per room and not the percentages given as they are easily calculated.
  2. This table has been transcribed for all of England and Wales. The north of England was entered by Paula Aucott in Spring 2001 and the remainder was entered by Rachel Granville in spring 2002.
  3. The table is restricted to households in which at least one member was present on Census night.
  4. This table was originally called hous1971 and was a combination of the English and Welsh data. This was amended in February 2010 to be h_dens_1971_ew to reflect more accurately the area covered by the content.
  5. In March 2021 the name of the table was updated from hous_1971_ew to be h_dens_1971_ew to more accurately reflect the content.

Checking:

  1. The total population column was checked against the populations living at different densities.
  2. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other datasets.
  3. The row for England and Wales plus the rows for conurbations only have a g_unit value, no county unit value is given.
